What is a 'deepfake' & how does it work?

The term "deepfake" combines the deep learning concept with something fake. Deepfake compiles hoaxed images and sounds and stitches them together using machine learning algorithms. As a result, it creates people and events that do not exist or did not actually happen.

What is deepfake AI?

Deepfake AI is a type of artificial intelligence used to create convincing images, audio and video hoaxes. The term describes both the technology and the resulting bogus content, and is a portmanteau of deep learning and fake. Deepfakes often transform existing source content where one person is swapped for another.

What tools are used to create deepfakes?

According to the U.S Department of Homeland Security's "Increasing Threat of Deepfake Identities" report, the several tools are commonly used to generate deepfakes in a matter of seconds. Those tools include Deep Art Effects, Deepswap, Deep Video Portraits, FaceApp, FaceMagic, MyHeritage, Wav2Lip, Wombo and Zao.

How do you create a deepfake image?

This is shown in detail in the figure below. The first step to producing a deepfake is transforming the face images into smaller feature-based representations using an encoder. This more information-rich representation is often referred to as the latent face.
